Georges Island has rich history. It was part of the "Halifax Defence Complex" from the mid-18th century to the Second World War. Interpretive panels and guides share a fascinating history from ancient times when the Mi’kmaq arrived in Kjipuktuk, the ‘Great Harbour’, to the arrival of the British in 1749, to the imprisonment of Acadians during the Deportation of 1755-63, and to the protection of the city during the World Wars. The Island is a glacial drumlin and the largest island entirely within the harbour limits of Halifax Harbour. You will be able to explore the underground complex beneath Fort Charlotte on Georges Island. Travellers will have an aerial view of the Halifax Harbour and part of the Halifax waterfront boardwalk.
Travelers can either spend 1 hour or 5 hours on the island. They can have a picnic and do the tour or just do the tour and come back on the next ferry coming back to land.
