Itinerary
1
Ahu Vinapu
Ruins of two important ceremonial centers can be seen in this area. Multiple fallen and broken statues are visible and many pukao as well. The wall of one of the ahu looks similar to some inca and pre-inca stonework which led to speculations about the origin of the first settlers. Lots of peculiar things to be found in the surrounding area.
1 hour
2
Ahu Te Pito Kura
Te Pito Kura is an egg-shaped magnetic rock that has been the subject of old legends. Next to it there is a large ahu that has only one fallen statue: Moai Paro, a huge moai among the biggest of the whole island.
45 minutes
3
Papa Vaka
In this site we will see some examples of petroglyphs, all related to the sea and related legends.
45 minutes
4
Anakena Beach
The beach is a well sheltered bay with white sand that surrounds the archaeological sites. Three volcanic hills flank the southern and eastern parts. Anakena was the legendary landing spot of the first Polynesian settlers. Swimming at the beach is possible. There are changing rooms and services for US$1.
Lunch will be served here.
1 hour
5
Ahu Nau Nau
Ahu Naunau is probably the best preserved restored ahu of the island. Located within the royal district, it tells the story of the ancient Rapanui highest chiefs and their immense power before it declined in later centuries.
30 minutes
6
Ahu Akivi
The first proper archaeological restoration of the island, Ahu Akivi has seven moai facing west. Old and modern myths blend together in this place.
