The tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62) was discovered in 1922 by the British archaeologist Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, Egypt. This was a major archaeological find, as Tutankhamun's tomb was one of the only ancient Egyptian royal tombs found largely intact. Tutankhamun was a pharaoh of the 18th dynasty who ruled from around 1332-1323 BC. He ascended the throne as a child and his reign was relatively short, only about 9 years. The tomb contained over 5,000 artifacts, including Tutankhamun's sarcophagus and coffins, funerary furniture, chariots, clothing, jewelry, and numerous other treasures.
