The name 'Aegibong' combines ‘Ae’ (애) meaning love, ‘gi’ (기) meaning mistress, and 'bong' (봉) meaning peak, to honor their love. In 1968, President Park Chung Hee likened their separation to the pain of divided Korean families, a sentiment memorialized at the peak. The observatory serves for security training and houses the Mangbaedan Altar, where North Korean expatriates perform ancestral rites. It features a naval war monument and seasonal lights visible from North Korea.
