Nestled within the modern cityscape, this archaeological site reveals a fascinating fragment of the Sacred Way (Iera Odos), the ancient road that connected Athens to the sanctuary of Eleusis. Just beyond the city’s ancient walls, the Kifisos River marked a crucial crossing point, where an arched stone bridge once stood.
Discovered during the construction of the Eleonas Metro Station, the remnants of the bridge include three surviving piers, indicating a structure with at least five arches. This historical crossing not only served as a vital link for trade and travel but also played a significant role in the Eleusinian processions, as thousands of pilgrims passed here on their sacred journey.
