Are you ready to turn your hobbies into a business?
Two of the best-preserved temples in all of Egypt sit north of Luxor, and far fewer travelers make the trip to see them.
At Dendera, the Temple of Hathor still wears its original color: a ceiling of deep blue painted with the night sky, vast columns crowned with the cow-eared face of the goddess, and a carved zodiac on the roof. At Abydos, the Temple of Seti I holds the King List, a wall naming 76 pharaohs in order, and some of the finest raised relief carving anywhere, alongside the mysterious Osireion behind it. Your Egyptologist makes sense of it all.
It is a long day with real driving, but the reward is two masterpieces with hardly a crowd in sight.

Itinerary
1
Dendera Temple Complex
About 90 minutes north of Luxor, the Temple of Hathor at Dendera is one of the most complete temples in Egypt, and the most colorful. You walk into the great hypostyle hall and look up at a ceiling that still holds its original deep-blue night sky and astronomical scenes, recently cleaned of centuries of soot. Columns carry the cow-eared face of Hathor, goddess of love and music, and a stairway leads to roof chapels and a copy of the famous Dendera zodiac. Your guide reads the ceiling like a star map.

Temple Of Seti I
Further north at Abydos stands the Temple of Seti I, dedicated to Osiris, god of the afterlife, and one of the holiest places in ancient Egypt. Inside, the carving is exceptional: raised relief so crisp it looks freshly cut, with paint surviving in the inner chapels. Here is the Abydos King List, naming 76 pharaohs in order, a roll call Egyptologists still rely on. Behind the temple lies the Osireion, a strange water-filled megalithic structure tied to the Osiris myth. Few tourists reach this far, so it is often just you and the stone.
