Jewish Quarter of Toledo
The Jewish Quarter of Toledo, or Barrio Judío, is one of the most historic and well-preserved in Spain. During the Middle Ages, Toledo was a cultural melting pot where Christians, Muslims, and Jews coexisted, and the Jewish community thrived, contributing to the city’s intellectual and economic development.
Winding cobblestone streets, stone houses, and decorative Mudejar-style elements define this charming district. Two remarkable synagogues remain: Santa María la Blanca, with its white horseshoe arches, and the Synagogue of El Tránsito, which houses the Sephardic Museum and features intricate Hebrew and Arabic inscriptions.
Despite its flourishing past, the Jewish community was expelled in 1492 during the Spanish Inquisition. Today, the quarter stands as a testament to Toledo’s multicultural history.
