En route to Thimphu, stop at Tachog Lhakhang Bridge, an iconic landmark and a marvel of ancient Bhutanese engineering. Built in the 15th century by the revered Tibetan saint and iron bridge builder, Thangtong Gyalpo, the bridge originally spanned the Paro River to connect travelers to Tachog Lhakhang, a temple he founded. Thangtong Gyalpo, known as the “Iron Bridge Builder,” is said to have constructed over 50 such bridges across the Himalayas, using iron chains forged by hand—an incredible feat for his time. The bridge, restored using some of its original iron links, sways gently above the crystal-clear river, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and fields. The nearby Tachog Lhakhang (Temple of the Excellent Horse) is a serene and sacred site, housing ancient statues and relics. A stop here provides not just a glimpse of Bhutan’s rich history and craftsmanship, but also a moment to appreciate the spiritual legacy of this extraordinary saint.
