Ishiyamadera Temple
On the shores of Lake Biwa in Ōtsu, Ishiyama-dera is a temple where legend and beauty meet. Over 1,200 years old, it is famous for the story of a monk who prayed here for gold to complete the Great Buddha of Nara; when gold was discovered, he built a temple around the sacred rock where his statue stood, giving rise to the “Stone Mountain Temple.”
Dedicated to Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, Ishiyama-dera has long been a beloved place of pilgrimage, especially for women. Visitors are drawn to its Main Hall built on massive rocks and its seasonal scenery—cherry blossoms, green maple, autumn colors, and winter snow—that has inspired poets and artists for centuries. A visit to Ishiyama-dera offers both spiritual depth and unforgettable natural beauty.
