Itinerary
1
Nikko Tosho-gu
A lavishly decorated Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Located in the scenic mountains of Nikkō, it’s known for its vibrant carvings, gold leaf details, and famous motifs like the “See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Hear No Evil” monkeys. Unlike the simplicity of most Shinto shrines, Tōshō-gū impresses with its ornate design and grand scale. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see for those interested in Japan’s samurai history and artistry.
1 hour and 30 minutes
2
Nikko Futarasan Shrine
Founded in 767, Nikkō Futarasan Shrine is one of the oldest and most sacred sites in the Nikkō area. It’s dedicated to the deities of Mt. Nantai, Mt. Nyoho, and Mt. Taro, and has long been a spiritual center for mountain worship. The shrine features tranquil forest surroundings, sacred trees, and a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the grandeur of nearby Tōshō-gū. It’s a perfect stop for travelers seeking nature, spirituality, and quiet beauty in the heart of Nikkō.
