Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters
Located just outside Naha City, this historic site served as the command center for the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The underground tunnels were dug by hand and housed operations rooms, communication centers, and living quarters for thousands of Japanese soldiers.
Today, the site has been carefully restored and is open to visitors. Walking through the narrow corridors, one can feel the somber atmosphere and imagine the harsh conditions soldiers endured. The attached museum offers detailed exhibits, including wartime artifacts, photographs, and personal accounts, providing deep insight into the realities of the battle and its impact on Okinawan civilians and military personnel.
A visit here offers a powerful and sobering look into one of World War II’s fiercest battles and is a must-see for those interested in history and peace.
