The first ascent to Mt, Meru was Fritz Jäger in 1904 before the last eruption. And it is located 70km west of Mt.Kilimanjaro. You can have spectacular view from each 2 mountains when it clear sky. Also it is ninth or tenth highest Mt, in Africa, died volcano. Pick up from hotel drive via Moshi road about 1hr about 35 km. First gate Ngongongare for registration, payment. Drive again in the park, one the way to second gate, you will see lot of Animals, eg, Elephants, Zebras, Antelope and warthog.
Second gate Mommela gate starting point, 1650m/5500ft above sea level.
Two option’s Long route and short route. The first day start with long route about 12kms/7hrs, through the Rainforest big trees, common name, east African yellow wood. With Fun Fig Tree lunch point. Continue walking for acclimatisation below the ash cone create 2700m/9000ft, from here descent to Miriakamba hut 2500m/8331ft.
