About
This tour is an exceptional and unique way to get to know the surroundings of Barcelona. The opportunity to leave the city allows to connect much more deeply with the local culture and history. It is an incredible setting to enjoy art, religious tradition and the close relationship that people in the area maintain with the sanctuary. It also offers the possibility of discovering the Mediterranean nature: its flora, fauna, endemic species, abrupt landscapes and spectacular rock formations.
When you drive up to the monastery of Montserrat, the views are spectacular. The road winds between mountains, and gradually the imposing silhouette of the rock appears among the vegetation. Its rounded and unique shapes, shaped by time, give it an almost magical air.
With each curve, breathtaking panoramic views of the valley open and, if the day is clear, you can even see the sea in the distance. When you arrive at the monastery, the image is striking: the historic building nestled between the mountains, in an environment that transmits peace and greatness at the same time. It’s a journey that, even before the visit begins, already leaves you open-mouthed.

Ermita de Sant Joan
From the Monastery of Montserrat, the road gently ascends a well-marked path to the Cross of Sant Miquel, a spectacular viewpoint from where you have a breathtaking view of the monastery and the Llobregat valley.
From there, the trail continues to climb between rock formations and Mediterranean vegetation to the Hermitages of Sant Joan and Sant Onofre, ancient buildings embedded in the mountain where the monks lived in isolation. The setting is breathtaking, with vertical rock walls and a sense of absolute peace.
Afterwards, we will descend the Jacob Stairs, a flight of stairs that has about 90 steps and connects the hermitages with the Camí Nou de Sant Jeroni. From there, we will embark on the path to the funicular Sant Joan, surrounded by a spectacular landscape where the mountain shows its most imposing side. This section will prepare us for the next stage of the route, further delving into the natural beauty and history of Montserrat.

Sant Joan Funicular Lower Station
During the tour, we will pass by the funicular of Sant Joan, a historic means of transport inaugurated in 1918 to connect the monastery to the top of the mountain. With its steep slope, it allows quick access to some of the best views of Montserrat and has been key to facilitating access to the paths of ancient hermits.
From here, we will continue our hiking trail, crossing the torrent of Santa Maria, a small natural waterway that collects water from the mountain. After crossing it, we will continue ascending a path that will take us to the hermitage of Santa Anna, an ancient monastic refuge surrounded by a calm and rocky environment, ideal for a break before continuing the route.

Abadia de Montserrat
The Basilica of Montserrat is the spiritual heart of the monastery and an architectural gem that combines Gothic and Renaissance elements. Its construction began in the 16th century, although it has undergone several renovations over the centuries, being largely rebuilt in the 19th century following the destruction caused by Napoleonic troops. Its majestic and ornate interior creates an atmosphere of recollection and admiration.
Also included during the visit is the entrance to see La Moreneta, the Virgin of Montserrat, who was proclaimed patron saint of Catalonia in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII. This 12th century Romanesque carving, known for its characteristic dark color, is the main symbol of devotion of the shrine and attracts pilgrims from all over the world.
