Itinerary
1
Tainui Landing Memorial
Start the tour at the Tainui Landing memorial and learn about the arrival of a great voyaging canoe.
2
Devonport Domain Playground
Take a stroll past through of New Zealand’s oldest and most scenic cricket grounds.
3
North Head
Walk up this volcanic mountain, a place where volcanic rock, military tunnels, and Māori heritage intertwine, which likely erupted between 20,000 and 50,000 years ago.
4
Old Guns Never Die
Pass by these historic guns, used for training and demonstration but could fire armour-piercing shells strong enough to disable a warship.
5
Summit Battery (Fort Cautley)
Enjoy the views of Auckland from a vantage point, built between 1885 and 1892 and was a key defensive site, part of a chain of fortifications designed to protect Auckland from naval attack during the “Russian Scare” of the 1880s.
6
Cheltenham Beach
Stroll along this serence beach, one of Devonport’s most beloved and beautiful spots. A long, golden stretch of sand nestled beneath the northern slopes of North Head
7
McHughs Of Cheltenham
Pass by this historically rich restaurant, which origins trace back to 1913 when it was established as a tearoom and bathing facility. In 1981, taken over and refurbished by John McHugh, but note that entry is not included in this walking tour
8
Cheltenham Road
As you walk along this street, you’ll see hallmark features of early New Zealand settler architecture: sash windows, ornate fretwork, and corrugated iron roofs, all well suited to the coastal climate
9
Torpedo Bay Navy Museum
End at this iconic Navy Museum, telling the story of New Zealand’s maritime service — not just battles and ships, but the people behind the uniforms. But please note entry is not included in this walking tour.
