The largest temple in Kamakura, founded in 1253 by Tokiyori Hōjō, the fifth regent of the Kamakura shogunate. A prominent monk of the Song Dynasty in China was invited as the first abbot. This temple still retains valuable ancient Buddhist structures that no longer exist in China or Korea.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
This sanctuary was built as a samurai deity at the end of the 11th century, when warriors began to play a central role in society. It is classified as a national historic site.
