Meet your guide at Housesteads Visitor Centre before walking up to the Roman fort together. Collect your walking poles (optional) and family-friendly Hadrian’s Wall Highlights Bingo cards, then enjoy an introduction to the landscape and the people who once lived on this frontier of the Roman Empire before your adventure begins.

Housesteads Roman Fort - Hadrian's Wall
Explore the remarkably preserved remains of Housesteads Roman Fort, once home to around 800 Roman soldiers on the edge of the Roman Empire. Step inside ancient barracks, peek into the communal toilets and wander through the remains of the civilian settlement. Along the way, hear tales of Roman life on the frontier, tales of the notorious Border Reivers, including the Armstrongs and their surprising connection to the Moon and discover why one of Housesteads’ buildings has earned the dramatic name, the Murder House.

Enjoy the rare opportunity to walk on top of Hadrian's Wall, the only section where this is permitted, and take in spectacular views across Broomlee Lough, home to Broomlee Lough, home to Britain's only native freshwater crayfish, and Wark forest.

Step inside Milecastle 37 (Housesteads Milecastle), one of the best-preserved milecastles on Hadrian's Wall and lies just west of Housesteads Roman Fort. Look through the archway and enjoy spectacular views north.

Enjoy walking along Hadrian's Wall to the Pennine Way, Britain's first National Trail and the route of the infamous 268-mile Spine Race. Learn about this gruelling event, held in both winter and summer. Spot the lime kiln, one of many that once dotted this pre-industrial landscape, and have your photo taken at the iconic Pennine Way stile.

Housesteads Roman Fort - Hadrian's Wall
We'll return along the lower path, spotting wildlife and listening for the distinctive calls of skylarks and curlews. Back at Housesteads, you can explore the mini museum, try on Roman armour and enjoy a short film about the site. There's also a small gift shop and visitor facilities.
