Hagia Sophia Mosque
The gallery offers a closer look at the magnificent mosaics, which are among the most exquisite in the world. These mosaics date back to the Byzantine era and depict various religious figures, including Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints and emperors.
One of the most famous mosaics is the Deesis mosaic, located in the southern gallery, which portrays Christ flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist in a beautiful, poignant scene of supplication. Another notable mosaic is the Empress Zoe mosaic, featuring Byzantine Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos and Empress Zoe presenting gifts to Christ.
The gallery also provides a unique perspective on the impressive dome and the intricate architectural details that characterize Hagia Sophia. Visitors can observe the complex interplay of light and shadow that changes throughout the day, enhancing the ethereal atmosphere of the space.
In addition to the mosaics, the gallery floor includes various artifacts and exhibits.
