Markthalle Basel
The Basel Market Hall (also known as the "Grossmarkthalle") is a building erected in Basel in 1929, which was used for market operations until 2004. After standing empty for several years, it was renovated, and various specialty shops opened. Today, the market hall primarily serves as a venue for cultural events (e.g., flea markets, cooking classes, public tours, concerts, comedy nights) and as a food court with street food stalls from around the world. Depending on timing, out guide will point out a couple of sustainable food stands in Markthalle and a local, bio produce store housed in Markthalle. If you are lucky, they have a flea market or a special event with music or poetry taking place while you are there. Please look around the hall to appreciate the building’s architecture with its very special cement arched ceiling. This building was renovated by the famous Basel sustainable architect Barbara Buser and her team.
