Itinerary
1
Altopiano del Golgo
Standing at a staggering 270 meters deep, Su Sterru is the single-drop sinkhole of Europe and an iconic feature of the Golgo Plateau, situated 400 meters above sea level in the Baunei region. This chasm, steeped in mystery and legend, captivates visitors with its eerie atmosphere and ancient tales. According to local lore, Su Sterru was once home to a serpent, su scultone, a threat only dispelled in the 17th century with the construction of the nearby San Pietro Church. A must-see for adventurous spirits seeking Sardinia's mythical landscapes.

Chiesa di San Pietro a Golgo
The rural Church of San Pietro, one of the most famous landmarks on the Golgo Plateau, draws thousands of visitors each year. Located about 8 km from Baunei, it was built between the 17th and 18th centuries with contributions from local shepherds who sought to maintain religious observances in the remote landscape. The church's architecture is simple yet charming, with a single hall accessed through a wooden door. Enclosed by a stone wall, it features us istaulus—shelters for pilgrims from across Ogliastra who traveled here for major celebrations, offering a unique glimpse into Sardinia's rich cultural heritage.

Maschera di Pietra
The "Stone Mask" of Golgo, also known as "Faccia Litica," is a remarkable basalt wall that takes on an uncanny human likeness when viewed from a specific point on the trail below. This ten-meter-high rock face has been sculpted over centuries by rain and wind, which have naturally etched out distinct human features—eyes, nose, and lips. A visit here is a must for hikers and nature lovers exploring Sardinia’s Golgo Plateau, offering a fascinating glimpse into nature’s artistry amid stunning landscapes.
