Dazaifu Temmangu
Dazaifu Tenmangu is one of Japan’s most important Shinto shrines, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning. Tochoji is one of the oldest Shingon temples in Kyushu, founded by the famous monk Kobo Daishi. Its main hall houses the Fukuoka Great Buddha, a 10.8-meter seated wooden statue — the largest of its kind in Japan — and a colorful five-storied pagoda stands in the temple grounds in the heart of Hakata.
