Some destinations are beautiful. Some are historic. Very few are both - and almost none come with a story that no one else is telling. Belene Island sits in the middle of the Danube between Bulgaria and Romania. In a single extraordinary day you will stand where Roman soldiers controlled the frontier of the Empire, step inside a church that became a shrine to martyrs executed for their faith, walk through Bulgaria's most significant communist-era labour camp, and watch Dalmatian pelicans glide over Danube wetlands. But here is what makes this tour truly unique. The communist camp closed in 1989 - yet Belene Island never stopped being a place of confinement. An active prison operates here tod...

Belene
Stop 1 - Belene Town: Roman Customs House Dimum and Catholic Church
Location: Belene town, northern Bulgaria - approx. 3 hours from Sofia
Time at stop: approx. 1 hour
Your first stop is Belene town itself - where two extraordinary chapters of history sit side by side. The Roman customs house Dimum, built at the end of the 1st century BC, was a frontier post controlling movement across the Danube at the edge of the known world. Then the Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1860 - a shrine to Monseigneur Eugene Bosilkov and three other priests arrested and executed in 1952. Their crime was faith. Bosilkov was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1998. Two thousand years of history in one short walk.

Belene Prison
Stop 2 - The Checkpoint: Crossing Into Persin Island
Location: Persin Island checkpoint, Belene
Time at stop: approx. 10 minutes
This is the moment that makes Belene unlike any other tour in Bulgaria. To enter Persin Island you must pass through a formal security checkpoint managed by the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice. An active prison operates on the island today - alongside the memorial park, the Roman ruins, and the nature reserve. Your permit, arranged on your behalf, must be registered in advance. Without it, entry is refused. This is not a reconstruction of history. It is history, still in use.

Nature Park Persina
Stop 3 - Lager 1 and Lager 2: The Memorial Park
Location: Persin Island, Belene
Time at stop: approx. 1 hour 30 minutes
From 1949 to 1989, over 20,000 people passed through Belene's two camp sites - intellectuals, priests, teachers, officers whose only crime was thinking freely. What remains is preserved as a memorial park - foundations, rusted wire, watchtower positions, survivor testimonies. Your local island guide, with a lifelong connection to this place, walks both sites with personal testimony and lived knowledge. Names are named. Stories are told. The people brought here are not reduced to statistics.

Nature Park Persina
Stop 4 - Persina Nature Park
Location: Eastern Persin Island - Ramsar designated wetland
Time at stop: approx. 1 hour (subject to seasonal conditions)
And then the island surprises you completely. Persina Nature Park is one of the finest birdwatching destinations in southeastern Europe - home to over 220 species including Dalmatian pelicans, sea eagles, lesser cormorants, and red-breasted geese. Wildlife sightings depend on season and conditions and cannot be guaranteed, but the wetland walk itself - moving from the weight of the memorial park into this extraordinary natural sanctuary - is one of the most unexpected transitions in Bulgarian tourism. Bring binoculars.
