Lordi's Square
We are meeting at Lordi's Square in the center of Rovaniemi, at the entrance of the Sampokeskus Commercial Centre. This entrance is located between the Marimekko store and the Espresso House. I will carry a canvas bag with 'Rovaniemi' written on it.

We’ll start at Lordi's Square, a lively spot named after the famous local band Lordi, known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006. We’ll also learn about the square’s connection to the Finnish epic Kalevala and its links to Finnish mythology.

We walk by the river and see the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge, a symbol of Rovaniemi, known for its unique design.

We’ll also stop by the Angry Birds Park, a colorful attraction created in collaboration with Lappset, a local play equipment manufacturer, offering fun activities for all ages.

Rovaniemi Church
We visit Rovaniemi Church, an excellent example of post-war Finnish architecture completed in the 1950s. Its clean lines reflect Nordic functionalism and a distinctly minimalist aesthetic.
Inside, the highlight is the monumental altar fresco “The Source of Life” by Lennart Segerstråle.

At Rovaniemi City Library, we see one of the key works of Finnish modernism, designed by architect Alvar Aalto, reflecting his human-centered approach to architecture.
Inside, we admire the flowing interior layout, organic forms, warm materials, and carefully designed natural light that together create a calm, welcoming atmosphere.

Lappia Hall
Lappia Hall is another example of Alvar Aalto’s design in Rovaniemi and a key part of the city’s cultural center.
Its striking white roofline is inspired by the surrounding landscape, while the interior combines wood, light, and organic forms to create a distinctive cultural space that blends modernism with regional identity.

Korundi House of Culture
We stop at Korundi to explore its unique blend of contemporary art and layered history. Housed in a former red-brick post bus depot, the building combines industrial character with modern cultural use. Inside, we visit the design shop.
