The monastery was founded in the 12th century during the reign of Queen Tamar, who is a central figure in Georgian history. It was originally built as a fortress and religious center.
The Vardzia cave monastery is carved directly into the rock of the Erusheti Mountain. The complex originally consisted of over 600 rooms, including churches, living quarters, and storage areas.
