Burg Hohenwerfen
Hohenwerfen Castle rises dramatically above the Salzach Valley, surrounded by Alpine peaks. Built in the 11th century, it served as a strategic defensive fortress and later as a residence for Salzburg’s archbishops. Visitors can explore the historic courtyards, towers, and exhibitions while enjoying sweeping mountain views. The castle is also famous as a filming location for the classic WWII movie Where Eagles Dare (1968), starring Richard Burton as Major John Smith, Clint Eastwood as Lieutenant Morris Schaffer, and Mary Ure as Mary Ellison. Key exterior scenes, including parachute landings and castle infiltration sequences, were filmed here, adding cinematic history to its medieval charm and dramatic setting.
