The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci is located in the old refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. The painting represents the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with his apostles, and portrays the reaction of each apostle when Jesus said one of them would betray him. Leonardo invented his own painting technique to be able to work slowly, and to perfect every detail. This new technique made the mural extremely fragile and its deterioration ensued.  Over the past five hundred years the painting’s condition has been seriously compromised by a combination of location, materials and techniques used, humidity and tourists. Early restoration attempts only made it worse. Finally, in 1980, a 19-year restoration began, the painting was ultimately restored, but it lost much of its original paint along the way.
