The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, inaugurated on August 30, 1993, under King Hassan II, is one of Morocco’s most iconic landmarks. Designed by French architect Michel Pinseau, the mosque stands partly over the Atlantic Ocean, reflecting a verse from the Qur’an about God’s throne being over water. Its towering minaret reaches about 210 metres, making it among the tallest in the world.
The complex spans roughly 9-10 hectares about 25,000 inside the prayer hall and another 80,000 outdoor. Its architecture blends traditional Moroccan elements — zellige tilework, carved wood, marble, stucco, intricate arabesques — with modern features like a retractable roof and powerful laser from the minaret pointing toward Mecca.
