The Hippodrome of Istanbul, located in the historic Sultanahmet district, was once the social and sporting heart of the Byzantine Empire. Originally built in the 3rd century AD and expanded by Emperor Constantine, it served as a grand arena for chariot races, political gatherings, and public events, accommodating tens of thousands of spectators.
Today, the site is known as Sultanahmet Square, where several original monuments still stand, including the Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpent Column, and the German Fountain. Although much of the original structure has not survived, the Hippodrome remains a powerful symbol of Istanbul’s rich Roman and Byzantine heritage.

Blue Mosque
The Blue Mosque, officially known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is one of Istanbul’s most famous landmarks, located directly opposite Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet. Built between 1609 and 1616 during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I, it is renowned for its elegant cascading domes and its six slender minarets.
The mosque takes its popular name from the stunning blue İznik tiles that adorn its interior, creating a serene and atmospheric space. Still an active place of worship today, the Blue Mosque remains a remarkable example of Ottoman architecture and a must-visit site for those exploring Istanbul’s historic heart.
