1
Palais des Papes
This collosal building is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but also the world’s largest gothic palace. With 15,000 square meters, this palace is filled with interesting stories and impressive architecture.
2
Place de l'Horloge
The heart of the city, a square that has been around for thousands of years and still, to this day, is the gathering place for most tourists. On this square, you’ll find restaurants and shops, as well as Avignon’s city hall and various other notable buildings.
3
Opera Theatre d'Avignon
Also found on Place de l’Horloge, the opera is an architectural gem that first opened doors in 1825. To this day, it is used for diverse forms of entertainment, such as opera, dance, theater and music. And never mind the art that takes place inside, the building is also worth a stop to admire the elegant facades and statues.
4
Musee Calvet
The official museum for Fine Arts in Avignon houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures and artifacts, ranging from the 15th century to the 20th century. The building and the collection combined form one of the most poetic and history drenched places in Avignon.
5
Remparts d'Avignon
The walls around the city, dating back to the 14th century, were once built to protect eh city form attacks and floods from the Rhone River. Construction went quickly, to make sure the city was safe. Nowadays, the city doesn’t need the walls for protection, so they form part of the décor of Avignon.
6
Street of Dyers (Rue de Teinturiers)
Imagine a street of which the name is literally “Street of the dyers”. You could guess what Rue des Teinturiers is known for. A walk along the cobblestone streets, right next to the waters of the Sorgue and find out more about the street’s colorful history.
