Monastery of Arkadi
Nestled in the picturesque hills of central Crete, the Arkadi Monastery stands as a symbol of resilience and freedom. Founded in the 16th century, this Eastern Orthodox monastery is renowned for its stunning Renaissance architecture and its pivotal role in Cretan history.
During the Cretan Revolt against Ottoman rule in 1866, the monastery became a stronghold for rebels and civilians. In a heroic act of defiance, hundreds of Cretans chose to detonate gunpowder stored within the monastery rather than surrender, marking a tragic yet inspiring chapter in Crete’s struggle for independence.
During our tour, you can explore the beautifully preserved church, wander through the serene courtyards, and visit the museum that chronicles the monastery’s storied past.
The Arkadi Monastery is not just a place of worship but a poignant reminder of the Cretan spirit and the enduring quest for liberty.
