The Old Town
The tour ends near Den Gamle By. Take a moment to enjoy the area before finishing your walk.
Dokk1 is Aarhus's waterfront public library and civic centre, opened in 2015 on the harbour where the Aarhus River meets the bay. From the terraces outside you get an open view over the redeveloped docklands.
2
Latin Quarter
The Latin Quarter is the oldest part of central Aarhus, a grid of narrow cobbled lanes lined with low painted houses, independent shops and cafes. You walk through it on your way from the harbour to the cathedral.
3
Aarhus Domkirke
Aarhus Cathedral (Aarhus Domkirke) stands on Store Torv and is the longest and tallest church in Denmark. Begun in the late 12th century in Romanesque style and rebuilt in Gothic form, it keeps a large collection of medieval frescoes inside.
4
Aboulevarden is the canal-side promenade along the Aarhus River. The river ran under a road for decades and was uncovered again in the 1990s; the banks are now lined with bars and restaurants. The Vadestedet crossing sits at its western end.
5
Lille Torv, the Little Square, sits just west of the larger Store Torv in the medieval core of Aarhus. It is a small open space ringed by shops and cafes and marks the junction between the old market squares and the pedestrian streets.
6
Our Lady Church
The Church of Our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke) on Vestergade grew out of a medieval Dominican priory. Beneath the church lies a crypt church rediscovered in the 1950s, one of the oldest stone-built church rooms in Scandinavia.
7
Stroeget
Stroget is the main pedestrian shopping street running through the centre of Aarhus, linking the old market squares with the station end of town. It is the busiest stretch of the city and lined with shops, department stores and street performers.
8
ARoS Aarhus Art Museum
ARoS Aarhus Art Museum is one of the largest art museums in northern Europe. On its roof sits Your Rainbow Panorama, a circular walkway of coloured glass by Olafur Eliasson opened in 2011, which is visible from across the city. Museum entry is not included in this tour.
9
Den Gamle By
Den Gamle By is an open-air museum built from historic Danish town houses that were dismantled elsewhere and re-erected here. The tour ends at its entrance; you can look over the timbered facades from outside or buy a ticket to go in, which is not included.
