The Residency was the abode of the British Resident, appointed as the administrator of Oudh by The East India Company. The33-acre area was a self-sufficient residential colony for British officers, their families and native servants. This is a place where the walls, though speechless, recount the gruesome tale of the 1857 mutiny. The sprawling British campus witnessed nearly 3,000 deaths in the effort to keep the Union Jack flying. Yet the British could not defend their domain and the buildings were lost to the high spirited and enthusiastic Indians who fought till their last breath. The trees, bullet-sprinkled walls, unusable cannons, and worn-out firearms all cry out with the burden of the deaths witnessed here. We also visit the graveyard to pay homage to the named and unnamed soldiers who gave their lives defending The Residency

The 1857 Memorial Museum, located within the historic Residency complex - Lucknow, preserves artifacts from the First War of Indian Independence. Administered by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), it displays rare photographs, weapons, and archival documents, highlighting the 1857 siege.
