Szenisch
Your day begins with pickup from your lodging, where you meet your guide—a former National Park Ranger—and travel east along Highway 44 toward the dramatic landscapes of the Badlands. Along the way we pass sweeping prairie, roadside dinosaur statues, and the small ghost town of Scenic. As the landscape opens into the Badlands, your guide introduces the Lakota name Mako Sica — “Land Bad” — and shares the 70-million-year geologic story of ancient seas, erosion, homesteading, and the rare black-footed ferret that still inhabits this rugged land.

2
Norbeck Pass
Entering through the quieter Interior side of the park, the prairie suddenly falls away into a maze of sharply eroded ridges and layered formations glowing in the soft morning light. From this first overlook we begin reading the landscape, tracing the transformation from ancient inland sea to subtropical forest to open grassland. As you approach Norbeck Pass, the formations tighten and rise closer to the road. You stop to view a striking solitary hoodoo—a narrow rock spire left standing as the softer layers around it erode away. If you’d like, a short, uneven stretch offers the chance to step out for a dramatic photo perspective.

3
Bigfoot Pass Overlook
This dramatic stretch of Badlands Loop Road opens to sweeping views where sharply eroded ridges fall into the vast White River Valley, glowing in the morning light. From these high overlooks, we share the story of Chief Big Foot and the tragic events of 1890, placing the landscape within its deeper Lakota history. We also explore the striking contrast between open prairie and rugged formations, and the powerful forces of wind and water that continue shaping the terrain below.

4
Aussichtspunkt Yellow Mounds
This stretch of the loop reveals one of the park’s most unexpected and colorful landscapes, where formations shift dramatically into soft yellows, purples, and rust tones — evidence of ancient volcanic ash and mineral-rich soils exposed by erosion. At Yellow Mounds, we explore how subtle changes in chemistry created this vivid palette, then continue into Conata Basin, where rugged Badlands formations transition into open prairie, offering prime habitat for bison and bighorn sheep. The contrast here is striking and photogenic, making this both a geological highlight and a key wildlife viewing area.
20 Minuten
5
Aussichtspunkt Pinnacles
This northern stretch of the park delivers some of the most dramatic and expansive scenery of the day, where jagged spires and sheer ridgelines rise above vast protected wilderness. From these elevated viewpoints, we take in sweeping panoramas that feel truly untamed, often with opportunities to spot bison moving across the grasslands below. For a deeper frontier experience, we can optionally travel Sage Creek Rim Road, where prairie dog towns buzz with activity and wildlife sightings are more common.

6
Wanddroge
We arrive in Wall for a relaxed midday break, with lunch at Salty Steer for hearty local fare, or the option to grab a bite while exploring the iconic western storefronts and nostalgic charm of Wall Drug. Lunch is selected and purchased individually, offering flexibility and personal choice.

7
Delta-09 Minuteman Missile Silo
These powerful stops shift from ancient geologic time to the tension of the Cold War. At Delta-09, guests stand above a preserved Minuteman II missile silo and look down into the once-armed nuclear deterrent that remained on alert for decades. At the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site Visitor Center we explore the strategies, technology, and human stories behind America’s nuclear defense system. When available, guests may view the virtual tour experience of the underground launch control facility, offering a rare glimpse into the secure bunker where Air Force crews once stood watch around the clock.

Aussichtspunkt „Big Badlands“
Here the Badlands unfold in dramatic waves of striped ridges and deep-cut gullies, revealing millions of years of history in plain sight. A short walk along the overlook brings you out into the landscape, adding scale, immersion, and one of the park’s most iconic views.
20 Minuten
9
Notch Trail
Here, you step directly into the formations rather than simply viewing them from above. The Door and Window Trails provide easy access to dramatic openings in the rock wall, letting you walk out onto the Badlands terrain itself. For more adventure, the Notch Trail features its iconic wooden ladder climb and rewards you with a sweeping overlook at the end. Trail choice remains flexible based on your energy, interest, and comfort level, creating a memorable hands-on experience before completing the loop.

10
Ben Reifel Besucherzentrum
As you pass through Cedar Pass, you can choose to stop at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center to explore fossil exhibits, displays, and the gift shop, or continue on. We then begin the scenic return toward the Rapid City area along Highway 44, where the open prairie provides a peaceful close to the day.
