Die Kohala Mountains sind der älteste der fünf Vulkane, die die Big Island von Hawaii bilden, und liegen an der Nordspitze der Insel. Kohala entstand vor über einer Million Jahren, brach zuletzt vor etwa 120.000 Jahren aus und gilt heute als erloschen. Im Laufe der Zeit hat die Erosion die Landschaft dramatisch geformt und tiefe, üppige Täler und steile, zerklüftete Klippen geformt, insbesondere auf der dem Wind zugewandten (nordöstlichen) Seite, wo reichlich Regen dichte Nebelwälder und eine reiche Artenvielfalt ermöglicht. Im Gegensatz dazu sind die dem Lee zugewandten (westlichen) Hänge aufgrund des Regenschatteneffekts viel trockener. Die etwa 1.660 Meter hohe Bergkette ist eine wichtige Wasserscheide und speist zahlreiche Bäche und Flüsse, die sich ihren Weg durch das Gelände bis zum Meer bahnen. Kohala hat als Geburtsort von König Kamehameha I., der die Hawaii-Inseln vereinigte, eine große kulturelle Bedeutung.
