Wat Phra Sri Sanphet was the most important royal temple in ancient Ayutthaya. It stood inside the royal palace grounds and was used for royal religious ceremonies. The temple is famous for its three large chedis, which contain the ashes of members of the royal family. It once had a huge golden Buddha image, about 16 meters tall. Much of the temple was destroyed during the Burmese invasion in 1767. Today, the three chedis remain one of Ayutthaya’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of its royal past.
