Already in the Middle Ages, there were countless merchants' courts around the market square. Leipzig was the scene of colourful goods fairs : Twice a year, travelling traders from all over Europe came to the city.
Leipzig’s golden age began with the advent of model fairs around 1900. Medieval farms were no longer in demand – the goods were now presented in exhibition halls. In just a few years, impressive buildings shot out of the ground : the Central Fair Palace, Speck's courtyard or the famous Mädler Passage.
