The museum was opened by the Ruler of Dubai in 1971, with the aim of presenting the traditional way of life in the Emirate of Dubai. Some of the shops are four decades old, while some are new as of 2019. The major items that the mall deals in are gold, platinum, diamonds and sometimes silver.
