History of Rakkiththa Kanda Rajamaha Viharaya Rakkiththa Kanda Rajamaha Viharaya is one of Sri Lanka's hidden ancient Buddhist temples, located near Ella in the peaceful village of Karandagolla. The temple is believed to date back more than 2,200 years and is traditionally associated with King Walagamba (Valagamba), who ruled during the 1st century BC. The temple is famous for its ancient cave shrine, where early Brahmi inscriptions provide evidence that Buddhist monks lived and meditated here as early as the 2nd century BC. Over the centuries, the temple was expanded and renovated, particularly during the Kandyan Kingdom. Inside the cave, visitors can admire beautifully preserved Kandyan-era murals and statues of the Buddha. One of the temple's most unique features is the blend of Kandyan and British colonial influences in its paintings, including artwork dating to 1886 and the British royal coat of arms.
